[The Good Life] Hallow Helps The Hollow

β˜•οΈ Happy Wednesday morning!

To help you love like Jesus, here are 3 ideas from me, 2 quotations from others, and 1 question for you to live into.

3 Ideas From Me πŸ€“

1)

We ask God to "hallow" his name because our understanding and imitation of God rings far too hollow.

2)

While discipleship to Jesus can't be reduced to the Our Father, there's hidden wisdom in discipling people to a) pray, b) pray often, c) direct their prayers to a God we know as Father, and d) to ask our Father to "hallow" his name by shaping and sharpening our "theology proper" over time as we experience him through the ups and downs of life.

3)

This is the prevailing mindset of organizational leadership and it distracts leaders from their primary work of developing their own capacity to guide people through change (which is always painful and resisted because it requires good things to be left behind) so the church can be who God intends the church to be in this cultural moment.

2 Quotations From Others 🀯

1)

Bible Project on why Jesus prays for God's name to be hallowed:

"In the story of the Bible, Yahweh chooses Israel to represent his name and reputation to the nations as holy, which means utterly unique, one-and-only, and honored. But the people fail in this vocation, and as a result, God's name is dishonored. Israel's prophets hope for a time when Yahweh will restore his holy name and reputation among the nations. In his teaching and ministry, Jesus is claiming to fulfill these hopes as he invites his followers to join him in praying for the restoration of Yahweh's holy reputation in the world."

2)

Theologians Stanley Hauerwas and Will Willimon on how God transforms us through the Lord's Prayer:

"We are commissioned to live our lives in such a way as to make visible to all the world that the holy God reigns, that God has a rightful claim to all of his creation, that God has regained some of his rightful territory from the enemy. God's newly won territory is us, those who pray, "Hallowed be thy name."

1 Question For You πŸ€”

Jesus teaches us to ask our Father "to keep his name holy" (Matthew 6:9).

Think about this text and your everyday life in the world around you. What word or phrase stands out to you? Bring this to God and ask him how He hopes you'll respond to what you see.

If you'd like to share what God is stirring up in your head, heart or life, I'd love to hear about it! Shoot me a text (706.424.1130) or an email (matt@transformdiscipleship.org).

"Wait for the LORD" - Psalm 27:14 Your leadership is most needed when there are no easy answers. And the psalmist reminds us that God will help you as you lead. But how do you lead well when God doesn't seem to be around to help? Here's the key: leading well depends on who you are more than what you do. Ruth Haley Barton reminds us that discernment isn’t just about making the right decision, but becoming the kind of person who can lead with integrity. In times of uncertainty, we must...
